Arts & Crafts Inspired

The clients bought this Arts and Crafts property with a view to completely refurbishing it. It took just over a year to create this stunningly transformed home. The clients were very keen to ensure that the style of the early twentieth century was continued throughout the house. Many of its original features have been removed but where possible we incorporated the design elements that were sympathetic to the style even if they were not original.

The colours are all muted avoiding the modern trend for greys. The style of this era was focused on nature and natural forms so the colours and patterns are all inspired by the natural world. Some of the designs are based on William Morris classics.

It was fashionable to have a dado and picture rail and we used these in the design of the décor instead of removing them as is the current trend. The clients have very young children so whilst they liked idea of wallpaper they were nervous about installing it so the ideal solution was to introduce it above the picture rail. This also meant that they could be more adventurous with the design and colour.

All the fireplaces are blocked except for the wood burner in the lounge. Rather than blocking up these spaces we sourced authentic fireplace surrounds that gives character to the property. We followed this through with gorgeous radiator replicas and even the door handles, light switches and sockets were specified to complete the overall desired look.

The fireplace in the kitchen was just an open space where the previous owners had a dog bed. To make a feature with this space we installed brick slips to the recess so that it looks like an open brick fireplace, sourced an antique fire grate and installed a reclaimed oak mantel piece. This sits beautifully alongside the shaker style kitchen that incorporates both modern and traditional aspects. The designed banquette seating completes this harmonious look.

The bathrooms are as close to being authentic as possible given that they are a modern phenomenon. The choice of colour and style of the tiles with traditional style sanitary ware gives these bathrooms a timeless quality.

We love the children’s bedrooms, which are always fun to design. The children are little more than babies so they won’t outgrow these bedrooms for many years to come.

The clients were so delighted that they have referred Design by Deborah to a number of their friends.
